We all look forward to Friday for obvious reasons, but I found another reason a couple of years ago. A dear friend of mine (@aserkin for those of you who would like to follow another super awesome teacher) started wearing “nerdy” shirts related to science, specifically chemistry. I loved the concept and adapted it to all things “geeky.”
I decided to wear a different geeky shirt every Friday and document it with the hashtag #geekyshirtfriday. I embrace all genres, but I truly love anything related to Star Wars, Marvel, Wonder Woman (yes, I see the conflict there), math, pop culture, art, video games, and just about anything else that could be considered “geeky.” I think it’s important to let your geek flag fly and not be embarrassed about it. It’s given my students a chance to get to know me a little better. I’m also very impressed when students know what my shirt is about before I have to explain it! More importantly, it’s given me an opportunity to introduce them to some really pivotal pop culture references that they’ve been missing out on in life! I’ve been known to take 5 minutes out of class to show a video relevant to the shirt I’m wearing. Students have successfully been introduced to:
- Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody to go with the Sith Lords laid out in the formation of the band
- the skit from SNL to explain my “More Cowbell” shirt
- the scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail to explain the Luke Skywalker and Black Knight mashup shirt
- my Festivus Pole, but students were not interested in the Airing of the Grievances
As I looked through my closet this morning, I realized just how many geeky shirts I have. I keep buying them and I run out of Fridays. I have so many that I’ve never even worn yet. I’m really looking forward to the 2017-2018 school year to break in some of those new shirts. I’ve put together the shirts of 2016-2017 in a gallery below. There were some weeks I missed due to events like a pep rally or a conference (needed to dress professionally). I also was out on medical leave for the last month and a half of the school year and missed a lot of Fridays. Still, I managed to get 30 photos in 2016-2017! I hope you enjoy them as much as I did. Don’t forget to follow me this year! #geekyshirtfriday
